"What do I wear!?"
That's probably the question I get asked most often about engagement sessions.
Most couples will include a more dressy option (business casual) for a few photos, and then will change into something more casual that represents more of who they are. I always tell my clients to wear their favorite outfit. The one that makes them look in the mirror and say, "Dang! I look good!" If you feel like you look good, you WILL.
Solids usually photograph better than patterns, but I have seen some patterned outfits that have been awesome lately! Just don't get too crazy... ;o)
Coordinate, don't match. You don't want to look like twins, so don't go for complete matching outfits. Choose colors within the same color family, or take it back to the color wheel to find complimentary colors.
Consider your setting when choosing your outfits. If you've chosen to do outdoor photos in the winter, you will want to include lots of color. Earth tones are okay, but can leave the photos looking a little bland since there isn't a lot of natural color in the winter. On the other hand, if you are having your photos made in a garden in the summer, you'll want to consider more basic color choices.
Also, keep in mind that you can include others in your photos as well. Some couples opt to include their pets, or children if they already have them.
Recently I've had several couples want to follow a theme for their engagement session. If you are considering a 1920s style shoot, you'll want to keep your clothing, hair and make-up in line with that era. Likewise if you are planning for a more earthy shoot. You want to keep your choices in that vein of thinking.
Comfortable shoes. A lot of engagement sessions involve a bit of walking. I always encourage my brides that want to wear heels in their photos to bring a pair of flats to walk in from place to place, and then change into the heels when we are ready to take the actual photos.
For locations, don't be afraid to be creative and to think outside the box! Include some of your favorite locations, or the spot where you had your first date. The sky is the limit! We can work together to figure out how to incorporate the locations, themes, pets or other family members in your photos.
We can also work together to create images that will keep with the theme of your wedding in case you want to include some of them on your Save-the-Dates, or in your invitations.
These photos are about celebrating the two of you and this unique time in your relationship. Let's really show off who YOU are!
